Learning to be a ballroom dance instructor is not easy. It requires experience, skill, and a passion for dance. In this post, I will be discussing how long it takes to become a ballroom dance instructor.

So if you have been contemplating becoming a ballroom dance instructor, read on.

What does it take to become a Ballroom Dance Instructor?

Below are some of the most important things you need to become an instructor:

Experience

Obviously, you must be a ballroom dancer to be able to teach it. But, as a dancer, you must also be able to perform and compete well before becoming an instructor.

When competing, you learn how the dance is performed at national or international levels. You will then need this knowledge when instructing students on what they should do to become good dancers themselves.

Skill

You must be able to teach others what you know, so it is very important that you can demonstrate your skills well. You also need to help students with their technique and give them feedback on their performance. These are all skills that will make or break your teaching career as an instructor.

Passion

You cannot teach dancing if you have no passion for it. It takes time and dedication to become a good instructor, so you must love dancing to keep going towards your goal.

You may want to enjoy what you do, or it will be hard for students to take their lessons seriously if they feel that you are not passionate about dance.

Commitment

Just like in anything else, you will only become a ballroom dance instructor if you are committed and dedicated enough.

It is not easy for one person to teach all the different styles of dancing that we have today; therefore, it takes time and patience – qualities that require commitment – to improve your teaching skills as an instructor.

You must be committed to your students in order for them to develop their skills and achieve the best results.

There is no easy way around it; one must put much effort into becoming an instructor because it takes time, patience, and commitment.

How Long Does it Take to Become a Ballroom Dance Instructor?

Since you must be able to do the moves and understand all about the techniques of the different dance styles, I would say becoming a ballroom dance instructor starts when you first join your dance studio.

So, in my opinion, it may take as much time as it would take you to become a professional or expert ballroom dancer. It is important to note that different people learn at different speeds, so it is difficult to determine a specific time frame.

While some people will perfect the art of ballroom dancing in a few months, others may take years to get it right. However, you can be sure that once you have mastered your craft as an instructor, the hard work will definitely pay off.

Now, how long it takes to become a good ballroom dance instructor is another different topic altogether. Why? I have noticed that great ballroom dance instructors have three things in common: skill, experience, and passion.

While you may have the passion and skills, experience takes time, sweat, and, most importantly, commitment. So again, it may take years to become a really good ballroom dance instructor.

It is also important to note that it does not matter how long it takes you to achieve the right experience required for teaching because, in the end, passion and commitment will take you a long way.

How Long Does it Take to Become a Certified Ballroom Dance Instructor?

To be able to teach ballroom dance classes professionally, you must pass a certification exam. The best way to prepare for this exam is to sign up for a standard or intensive training course that the American Style Bronze Teacher Training offers.

The course teaches 17 styles of ballroom dances and takes about 16 months of training to complete. Once you have completed your training, you will be ready for the certification exam, which takes about 2hours to complete.

Tips for Becoming a Ballroom Dance Instructor

Be optimistic about it.

Do you want to get better at ballroom dancing? Do you want to teach it professionally? Then you need the right attitude. Positive thinking will get you far, but only if you are ready for hard work and dedication too.

You must be able to handle constructive criticism; otherwise, becoming a dance instructor may not be for you because students expect their instructors to give them constructive feedback.

Be aware that your progress will not always be constant and fast.

You must have patience in order for it all to work out in the end. Stay focused on what is important, keep going at a steady pace, and do not get discouraged when things become difficult from time to time because this is normal.

Commitment matters

As I mentioned earlier, teaching ballroom dancing is a commitment. You should not be looking for excuses to quit or claim that you tried it but failed because everyone starts from scratch, and the only way to succeed as an instructor is by putting in much effort into your craft.

Remember, this journey will require dedication, lots of patience, and commitment!

Be ready to try new things.

To perfect your skills, you must be willing to try new things and step out of your comfort zone. Of course, this is not easy because it will require you to push yourself every day, but the results are worth it.

Final Thoughts

How long it takes to become a ballroom dance instructor depends on various factors such as your experience, dedication, patience level, and commitment. If you are ready to commit your time to the process of becoming an excellent instructor, then it may not take that long to get there because passion can go a long way in this industry.
